The body of an unknown well-dressed man was found in the River Thames near Mark Brown's Wharf on Thursday 15 November 1900.

No money, keys, papers or jewellery was found on his body, which was well dressed.

He was described as:

  • 5ft 4in tall.
  • About 35 years old.
  • Dark brown hair and moustache.
  • Black diagonal jacket suit, in good condition, white shirt, red woollen socks, lace up boots. (shirt bore imprint of Messrs Gardiner and Co.).

His cause of death was given as drowning.

The jury at his inquest at Horselydown in Southwark, returned a verdict of found drowned, with no evidence to show how he came to be in the water.

Mark Brown's Wharf has since been demolished and the whole area redeveloped.
