Stanley Cassidy

Age: 76

Sex: male

Date: 28 Oct 1983

Place: Wingrave House, Amersham Street, Salford, Greater Manchester

Stanley Cassidy was battered to death at his ground floor flat in Wingrave House, Amersham Street in Salford on 28 October 1983.

He had been battered about the head at least 30 times with a blunt instrument.

He was found dead in a pool of blood in his council flat by his home help. It was heard that blood from the attack had splashed on the fireplace, walls and on the TV.

A 26-year-old man was tried for his murder but acquitted. He said that he had fled from Stanley Cassidy's home just as Stanley Cassidy was assaulted by another man.

When the man appeared in court, after hearing the evidence, the judge directed that the man be acuitted. He said to the jury:

I have come to the conclusion that this is a case where my duty demands that I should take it away from you.

The court heard that the man had been subnormal and that he had told the police a pack of lies when intiailly questioned, but that for some time since had afterwards told a consistent story in that it had been another man that had killed Stanley Cassidy during a burglary.

The judge noted:

There is no forensic evidence at all to support the proposition that this defendent was the perpetrator of this dreadful crime. the missing link is the other man.

It was heard that the man had initially lied about his movements around the time of the murder, but later admitted his involvement in the burglary at Stanley Cassidy's falt with the other man. In a statement he made to the police, he said that during the burglary they were disturbed by Stanley Cassidy, who was then immediately attacked by the other mana dnthat he fled the flat. He told detectives:

I swear I didn't hit the old man when he came into the room.

It was noted that the man tried named the other man, who was known to be violent, and who was quizzed by the police, but that he was never charged with any offence in connection with Stanley Cassidy's murder.
