Philip Tait was found dead at the bottom of some stairs at his bedsit in Somerset Terrace, Bedminster on 20 April 1985.
The police described his death as suspicious.
His post mortem examination revealed that he died from head injuries, but was unable to determine how he came by them.
It was reported that 50 police officers were involved in investigating his death and trying to discover his final movements on the Saturday, 20 April 1985, and that a murder style investigation had been launched, but that they were still not sure whether he had been deliberately killed.
A detective involved said:
They said that they knew that he had planned to go to a disco in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, but he was found dead at 5.40pm by a woman living in a bedsit in the same house.
It was believed that he had gone shopping in Broadmead earlier in the day wearing white jeans, a brown check shirt and a brown V-neck pullover.
An incident room was set up during the investigation at Broadbury Road police station.
Philip Tait had worked as a postal clerk at the Clerical Medical and General Insurance office for three weeks.
