Ben Smith died after being assaulted in Corn Street, Bath in the early hours of 1 November 2021.
A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of his murder but no charges were made. The police sent a file to the Crown Prosecution Service but they said there was no realistic prospect of a conviction and decline to take action.
His inquest stated that Ben Smith had been punched by another man who, fearing for his own personal safety, acted in self-defence.
He had been assaulted in Corn Street following a fight that broke out at a McDonald's restaurant, and suffered a head wound.
He was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol but died there the following day.
