The body of a man was found in the River Mersey on 13 May 1984.

It was found near Pier Head. It was said to have been in the water for a considerable time and the cause of death could not be determined.

The police said that they had spents months searching, but had failed to identify the man.

He was described as having been between 55 and 65 years old.

A Port of Liverpool police sergeant said:

There were no signs of identifation on him. All the usual intensive inquiries have been carried out, using missing persons lists, contacting police forces throughout the country and asking the publicity througfh the media but these have produced no results.

An open verdcit was returned at his inquest.
