John Hennessy died from a fractured skull on 31 August 1984.
He was found lying on the pavement in North Gate Street, Gloucester on the night of Saturday 26 August 1984 and taken to Cheltanham Hospital where he died five days later.
He was found with a fractured skull and other injuries.
He had earlier been drinking in the Pelican pub in St Mary's Street in Gloucester where it was thought that he had been involved in an argument.
A man was questioned for more then 24 hours before being released on bail with no charges preferred against him.
The police refused to reveal the findings of a post mortem examination.
John Hennessy had been a labourer and had been married and lived at The Lannett, Gloucester.
