Cecilia Phillips was mugged by three boys and died from a broken hip.
She was mugged in June 1983 in Chingford, but never recovered from the incident and later died in hospital on Sunday 25 March 1984. She died of pneumonia due to her injuries.
The pathologist said:
It was noted that the descriptions of the three youths involved had been very clear, even down to their clothing, but that because they were children the police had to observe strict laws in how they handled the matter.
They were all said to have been about 12. One of the youths had been white and the other two black.
Cecilia Phillips was said to have fought back when the boys tried to snatch her shoulder handbag, which they didn't get. After the incident she was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital in London for treatment.
He son said:
The police later denied that they had asked her son to keep quiet about the mugging. It was reported that her son claimed that the police had asked him not to talk about the mugging because they feared that the publicity might scare away the culprits.
Her son was reported as having said:
Cecilia Phillips's inquest returned a verdict of unlawful killing.
Her son was noted for having been a well-known actor in the Carry On films.
