Gladys Johnson was found dead in her home in Hillcrest Drive, Queensbury, on the morning of 21 May 1984.

He was thought that she had been murdered by a burglar.

Gladys Johnson had been a retired children's nurse and had lived at the council house in Hillcrest Drive for the previous 3 years.

Her body was found after her home help knocked at her door but got no reply

She had suffered from facial bruising, probably casued by blows from a fist.

The police said:

She was murdered in her own home trying to defend her property. There is evidence of a struggle. Some of the house had been ransacked.

When the police were called they went round the back and found a kitchen window was open and the back door closed, but insecure.

When they then went into the livingroom they found Gladys Johnson dead in the living room. Her television was still on and the curtains were drawn and the lights were still burning.

The police said that she was last seen alive at about teatime on the Friday, 18 May 1984.

A detctive said:

She was an elderley lady who walked with a stick and lived alone. Someone broke in  intent on stealing and she paid with her life.
