Stanley Farrant died one year and three days after a fight with a 23-year-old man.

Stanley Farrant had been a cleaning contractor.

He was assaulted at his home during his daughters birthday party on 14 November 1982. 

The man had attacked him after being asked to leave. 

Stanley Farrant suffered a fractured skull and died on 16 November 1983 after being in a coma. 

The man had been jailed for five years after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm. 

At his inquest, the Coroner noted that the legal definition of murder was that death had to occur within a year and a day from the act which caused the original injury. He said that if he had died that the man could have faced death charges.

He Coroner added:

I am not permitted to record a vedict of unlawful killing. the only alternative I have in an unsatisfactory open verdict.

The 23-year-old man had lived in Hadleigh, Essex.
