Three men were tried for manslaughter but acquitted. One of the men was directed by the judge to be found not guilty after it was heard that there wasn't enough evidence to convict him. The other two were acquitted following a trial.
The group had been out celebrating one of their 18th birthdays on 5 November 1983 and hone their way home they bought some chips. When they went down Boundary Street they passed Brian Challinor who had been chatting outside the Nags Head pub at the corner of Knowsley Road, after closing with his son and a friend and one of them asked for a chip. However, it led to a violent confrontation in which Brian Challinor was punched and kicked repeatedly.
He died two days later in Walton Hospital following an emergency operation. He died from a blood clot on the brain.
The men on trial claimed they had acted in self-defence.
The Nags Head has since been converted into residential use.
