Woman

Age: 24

Sex: female

Date: 1 Oct 1888

Place: Vault of New Scotland Yard, Victoria Embankment

An unidentified woman’s dismembered remains were discovered in stages during the autumn of 1888, in what became known as the Whitehall Mystery, one of the four canonical 'Thames Torso' cases.

On 2 October 1888, a labourer working at the Metropolitan Police’s new headquarters site on the Victoria Embankment found a parcel in an unlocked cellar vault. Inside was a headless, limbless female torso, wrapped in cloth and tied with string.
