Orville Davidson was shot in the heart on the Woodpecker Estate.
He was found lying in Knoyle Street at about 10pm.
Gunshots were reported to have been heard either in Woodpecker Road or Bawtree Road about an hour earlier and the police had been called out but had found nothing. It was not known whether the earlier reports of shots being fired were related to Orville Davidson's murder.
The police said that they were interested in speaking to anyone that had seen a gold Nissan Sunny car or a blue and white Yamaha motor cycle in the area around the time.
Three men were arrested for his murder but were all later released without charge.
Orville Davidson's friend Peter Buahin was also shot about four months later in Woodpecker Road and his murder is also unsolved.
Orville Davidson had lived in Purley, south London.
