Dwayne Forrester was stabbed in the chest in Little Garth, Pitsea at about 8.45pm on 7 July 2018.
The police arrested six people in connection with his murder, two of them being released under investigation.
The police said they had taken 400 statements, seized 820 exhibits, and viewed more than 180 hours of CCTV footage.
He had been stabbed once in the chest and was taken to hospital but later died.
The police released CCTV footage that showed Dwayne Forrester walking through an alleyway in Brundish moments before he was stabbed.
Little Garth was near Pitsea Road which ran along South Mayne and was a short distance from the Pitsea Flyover, the A13 and a Tesco shop.
It was noted that Dwayne Forrester had previously been convicted for drugs offences in December 2016 at Basildon Crown Court and sentenced to three years in prison. He had been caught with 116 wraps of heroin and 131 of crack cocaine. He was convicted of possession with intent to supply heroin, possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and possession of criminal property.

A Detective Chief Inspector said 'These pre-planned search warrants are part of the thorough investigation in Mr Forrester’s murder. Forensic examinations and searches of the addresses are being conducted. My officers continue to follow a number of leads but I’m still eager to speak to anyone with any information who’s not already contacted us'.
On 7 January 2022 a 24-year-old man was charged with his murder.
