Jason Gayle-Bent was stabbed outside his home by a gang of youths at about 9pm on 17 September 2006.

He had been sitting on a wall in Woodpecker Path near his front door with two friends at around 9pm when a gang of between 30-40 youths on bikes rode up and attacked them. He was stabbed and one of youths had fired an air pistol at them before they rode off.

It was thought that the gang had then gone off to Deptford Wharf where they had fired shots into the air outside the Community Action Centre in Grove Street and assaulted another person. The person had been on a moped and he had ridden off but was chased and when he crashed he tried to run off but was caught in a doorway and beaten and stabbed. The person was taken to hospital for treatment and later released.

The police said that they thought that the two attacks were connected.

After being stabbed Jason Gayle-Bent had managed to get back to a house in Ludwick Mews and then an ambulance came and took him to Lewisham Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His post-mortem stated that he had died from a stab wound to the heart. He had also been stabbed in the back and had received blows to his face and body, He had also been injured by an air-gun pellet.

Eight youths were arrested but no one was charged or convicted for his murder.

Jason Gayle-Bent was an unemployed lifeguard.
