Ray Anstey

Age: 52

Sex: male

Date: 29 Sep 1988

Place: Pennycross Sports and Social Club, Plymouth

Ray Anstey was stabbed to death at the Pennycross Sports and Social Club by robbers on the night of 29 September 1988.

His post mortem examination showed that he had been stabbed several times in the chest with a knife.

He was the steward of the club and was probably locking up for the night when he was ambushed by his murderers.

His body was found in the lavatory the following morning by cleaners where they turned up for work.

It was thought that the robbers had gone there to ransack the fruit machines after closing time which they had emptied.

A witness said that they saw two men at about 12.10am on 30 September 1988 getting into a dark brown estate car, which was thought could possibly have been a Mark 3 Cortina. The police said that they wanted to speak to the two men or anyone else that saw them.

The phone wires at the club had been ripped out.

Ray Anstey's ring, wallet, a bunch of keys and a lighter were also noted as having been missing.

His wallet had contained some membership cards and a photograph of his 8-year-old daughter.

The ring was noted for being unusually large and with having a gem in the corner from which a sunburst effect radiated. The ring was nine-karat gold.
