The charred body of a newly-born female child was found in Whitehaven at the end of January 1924.

The inquest heard tht the body, which was wrapped in a woman's undergarment and a newspper, was severely burned, and tht and arm and a leg were burned off. 

The police said that although exhaustive inquiries had been made, they hadn't been able to trace ny person in connection with the affair.

The doctor that carried out the post-mortem examintion was unable to state definitely that the child had been born alive, but expressed the opinion that there was a strong possibility that it had had a separate existence.

The jury at the inquest said tht they were of the opinion that the child had been born alive and returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown.
