Place: Nelson Railway Station

The body of a newly-born child was found in a package by a railway porter under the seat in a railway carriage whilst he was cleaning it.

The package was found to have contained the dead body of a newly-born female child.

It had a linen handkerchief tied tightly around its mouth and it was wrapped up in a bath towel and then enclosed in two wrappings of brown paper.

The train had travelled on the Friday morning from Moses Gate to Blackpool where it had then emptied and sent forward to Nelson where it arrived at 3.15pm. It had been a stopping train between Moses Gate and Blackpool and it was quite possible for the parcel to have been put on the train at any of the stations en route.

Prior to being wrapped up the child had been put on a fire in an attempt to burn it but for some reason had then been taken out of the fire and wrapped up. Its back was horribly mutilated from the process.
