Carl Winnberg was run over.
He was found seriously injured on the Wartling Road in Pevensey around midnight on 28 May 1943 and was taken to the Princess Alice Hospital where he died the following day, 29 May 1943.
He had multiple injuries and it was thought that a very heavy vehicle must have passed over him.
He was found by the driver and passengers of a 10hp Hillman saloon car who said that they passed him on the road and when they went back to him, they found him already injured.
At his inquest the coroner said that there was no evidence to show that the 10hp Hillman had been the vehicle responsible for causing his injuries and the coroner concluded that he had been runover by an unknown vehicle and returned an open verdict.
Carl Winnberg was a Canadian soldier.
