Johnny Connelly was found dead in Spiers Wharf canal, Glasgow.
It was thought that he had been assaulted a week earlier in an underpass at Garscube Road.
Police said that they were hunting for three men seen in CCTV.
The underpass at Garscube Road led to the Spiers Wharf canal and the police determined that he had been in it at 10.20pm on Monday 19 July 2019.
Earlier on in the evening he had been socialising in the city centre between 8pm and 10pm during which he was seen at Pure Gym on Bath Street at about 9.30pm.
However, the police said that they thought that he might have been assaulted in the underpass from which he had suffered head and body injuries.
At the time he was last seen he had been wearing a black Adidas hooded top, with white stripes down the sleeves, black jogging trousers and royal blue coloured Nike trainers.
