Place: Marylebone Workhouse, London
The body of a newly-born female child was found in the grounds of Marylebone Workhouse.
It was found in a fish basket.
It was determined to have been born alive and to have been strangled with a piece of tape and a piece of string, both of which were found tied tightly round the child's neck.
A verdict of wilful murder was returned at the Coroner's inquest on Tuesday 13 September 1904.
Little remains of the workhouse, which is now the site of the University of Westminster Marylebone Hall, opposite Madame Tussauds, but the old dispensary entrance can still be seen in Chiltern Street.
