Nathan Shaw died in a fire at a property in Knight Street, Tunstall.
Three people were arrested but no charges were made.
The police said that they were unable to say how the sofa caught fire, but ruled out any third party involvement.
Following the fire Nathan Shaw was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital where he died due to smoke inhalation.
